How to install a Wordpress blog

Using a Wordpress blog is a great way to add an interactive element to your website.  This article will guide you through setting up a Wordpress blog for your website.  You can watch the video or get outlined steps at the bottom.

 

 

Outlined Steps:

IMPORTANT NOTE: These instructions will show you how to install a Wordpress blog in a /blog folder.  If you plan on installing it in your root folder, you will need to STOP and contact our support.  The permissions will need to be applied at the server-level.

Step 1: Download Wordpress

1. Go to http://wordpress.org/download/
2. Press the "Download Wordpress" button on the right
3. Save the file to a folder on your computer
4. Open the file once it downloads
5. Press "Extract All" to the left
6. Press Next
7. Press Next
8. Checkmark "Show extracted files"
9. Press Finish
10. Rename your "wordpress" folder to "blog" (right-click, select rename)

Note: This will make your blog URL to be "www.yourdomain.com/blog/ instead of /wordpress. You can also change this or leave it alone.

Step 2: Configure the Wordpress file

1. Double-click your "blog" folder
2. Rename "wp-config-sample.php" to "wp-config.php"

Note: You can go to View -> Details to help you find the file.

3. Double-click the "wp-config.php" file
4. Select "Select the program from a list"
5. Press Ok
6. From the list of programs, select Notepad

Note: If Notepad is not listed, press Browse, navigate to C:\Windows\notepad.exe and press Open.

7. Checkmark "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file”
8. Press OK
9. Locate the following fields in the wp-config.php file:

/** The name of the database for WordPress */
define('DB_NAME', 'database_name_here');

/** MySQL database username */

define('DB_USER', 'username_here');

/** MySQL database password */

define('DB_PASSWORD', 'password_here');

 
10. Create a unique database name, user and password, as shown below:

/** The name of the database for WordPress */
define('DB_NAME', 'mywebsitedb');

/** MySQL database username */

define('DB_USER', 'mywebsiteuser');

/** MySQL database password */

define('DB_PASSWORD', 'mywebsitepassword');


Note: Make sure you do NOT delete the apostrophes.

11. Write down this information (you will need to enter it later)
12. Go to File -> Save
13. Go to File -> Exit

Step 3: Zip the Wordpress Files

1. Press the Back button so you see your "blog" folder
2. Right-click your "blog" folder, select Send to Archive
3. Move the "blog.zip" file to your Desktop

Step 4: Setup your Database and User

1. Login at https://panel.ihostnetworks.com
2. Press the Open "Website Control Panel" icon under Services
3. Press the Databases icon
4. Press "Add New Database"
5. Enter the database name from Step 2, #10
6. For Server Type, select MySQL   (IMPORTANT)
7. Press OK
8. Press "Add New Database User"
9. Enter the database username and password from Step 2, #10
10. Press OK

Step 5: Upload Wordpress

1. Press the Home icon in the upper-left corner
2. Press the File Manager icon
3. Press the httpdocs folder

Note: Do NOT select the "httpsdocs" folder

4. Select the "Upload File" option
5. Checkmark "Upload archive and extract it"
6. Press Browse
7. Select the "blog.zip" folder on your Desktop
8. Press OK

The upload may take several minutes.

Step 6: Set the Default Document

1. Press the Home icon in the upper-left corner
2. Press the Web Directories icon
3. Press Preferences
4. Under Default Document Search Order, move "index.php" to the top of the list

Note: If you do not see "index.php" in the list, make sure you add it and then move it at the top.

5. Press OK

Step 7: Assign Permissions

1. Press the permissions (lock) icon to the right of the "blog" folder
2. On the left, select “Plesk IIS User (IUSR_username)”
3. On the right, checkmark Read and Write permission under Allow
4. Press OK

Step 8: Run the Install Page

1. Go to http://www.yourwebsite.com/blog/wp-admin/install.php

Note: You will need to substitute "yourwebsite.com" with the actual name of your website.

2. Enter a blog name (this can be anything you like)
3. Enter a username and password
4. Enter your email address
5. Press "Install Wordpress"

When the install has completed, it will take you to your blog control panel.  To access the front page of your blog, press your blog name at the top. Also, your blog will be located at http://www.yourwebsite.com/blog/. You can now place a link on your website to this location.


Troubleshooting:


  • If the install was not successful, you will need to delete your database, user and delete any wordpress upload files and start over.
  • Try downloading the Wordpress files again and configure the "wp-config.php" file. Make sure you do not delete any of the formatting, or put in extra characters.
  • Contact our support if you continue to experience problems.
