How to encrypt your email address from spam bots

How to encrypt your email address from spam bots

If you have an existing contact form that is getting spammed, you may want to consider encrypting your email address in the form.  This stop most spam programs from harvesting your email address. In addition to encrypting your email address, you may want to consider changing the email address associated with your form.  Because once spammers have found a valid email address, they will never stop spamming it.

Step 1: Encrypt your email address
1. Go to
http://www.wbwip.com/wbw/emailencoder.html
2. Enter your email address you want to use
3. Press the "Encode" button
4. Copy the Encoded Email address.  It will look something like: user@domain.com

Step 2: Paste the encrypted email address in the form code

Email Form Before:
This is what the original email form code looks like before any modifications.  An email address of user@domain.com has been entered on the 3rd line.

<!-- Begin Email Form Code -->
<form method="post" action="/_ihnextras/cgi/cgishell.exe?replytovendor">
<input type="hidden" name="recipient" value="user@domain.com">
<pre>
Name:     <input type="text" name="name" size="40">
Email:    <input type="text" name="e-mail" size="40">
Subject:  <input type="text" name="Subject" size="40">
Comments:
<textarea name="comments" cols="40" rows="8"></textarea>
<input type=submit value="Submit" name="submit"><input type=reset name="reset">
</pre>
</form>
<!-- End Email Form Code -->

Email Form After:
This is what the modified email form looks like.  The email user@domain.com has been removed and the encrypted email address has been pasted in between the quotation marks.

<!-- Begin Email Form Code -->
<form method="post" action="/_ihnextras/cgi/cgishell.exe?replytovendor">
<input type="hidden" name="recipient" value="&#117;&#115;&#101;&#114;&#064;&#100;&#111;&#109;&#097;&#105;&#110;&#046;&#099;&#111;&#109;">
<pre>
Name:     <input type="text" name="name" size="40">
Email:    <input type="text" name="e-mail" size="40">
Subject:  <input type="text" name="Subject" size="40">
Comments:
<textarea name="comments" cols="40" rows="8"></textarea>
<input type=submit value="Submit" name="submit"><input type=reset name="reset">
</pre>
</form>
<!-- End Email Form Code -->

Step 3: Upload the form and test it out
Now that you have your encrypted email address entered in your form, go ahead save and upload your website.  Once that's done, you should be able to test it out and make sure you get the email.
