Adding Meta Tags

Adding Meta Tags

Meta tags are hidden information that gets inserted into the <HEAD> section of your website.  This is generally used for search engine optimization, but can also be used for robots tag, meta copyright tag, meta author tag, etc..  These tags are used to give web browsers and search engine spiders information or instructions on what to do. For more information, please watch the video below.

Meta Tags Components:

Meta Title: This is the most important meta tag.  The title is a one sentence summary what the page is about.  This will show up in the title bar of your browser, as well as on search results.  You should include some choice keywords to help improve your search rankings.  Just make sure the title reads well and is not overly wordy.

Meta Keywords: These are words or phrases separated by commas that describe what your website is about.  You may want to include your business name, website address (in case people search for it), popular products you sell, and even misspelled keywords.  Make sure the keywords that you use are relevant to your store.

Meta Description: This is a 1-3 sentence description of of the page.  This will help search engines classify your store.  It should be as compelling as possible.

Submitting Your Site to Search Engines

Once you have filled out the meta tag information, and your e-Store is complete, you will need to submit your e-Store address (http://shop.domain.com) to various search engines.  Depending on the search engine, it may take up to 2 to 3 weeks for it to show up.  You only need to submit your home page one time.  After that the search spiders will crawl your site and pickup the remaining pages, and then be crawled on a daily basis for updates.  For a list of free search engine submission sites, please visit the following links:

Google: http://www.google.com/addurl/
Yahoo: http://search.yahoo.com/info/submit.html
Bing: http://www.bing.com/webmaster/SubmitSitePage.aspx
AOL: http://dmoz.org/add.html

Note: Some search engines require you to setup a free webmaster account before you are allowed to submit your site.

If you have your e-Store linked directly off of your website, it is a good idea to make sure you have entered your meta tag information for your website.  Once you have done that, you will need to re-upload your website, and submit your site to the different search engines, along with your e-Store.
